Manufacturing Dissent

After watching Manufacturing Dissent has your opinion of Micheal Moore's films changed?

My opinions of Michael Moore's films have not changed, however my opinion of Michael Moore has changed. I understand all documentarians decide what footage is going to be placed into their films, and editing is a key process of this, however I feel as if Moore has left out some key components he discovered while making some of his documentaries. I still enjoy his films as they are very entertaining and send a very powerful message, however after watching Manufacturing Dissent I feel as if Moore is keen on leaving out some very powerful opinions and facts he discovered while making his films.

1. Describe the ways different people in the Documentary behaved, or the kinds of values and beliefs they displayed. Describe an element from the film to support your opinion.

I feel as if the writers of this documentary were all ganging up on Michael Moore. They all believed he was stretching the truth or lying about numerous facts he had found and put in his documentaries. An example was when the filming crew was going to Moore's pep rallies in which he wanted the president George Bush removed from office. He was very adamant about his opinions of Bush which was made very clear in his pep rallies. In the documentary when they were showing these rallies, they would constantly cut to pedestrians opinions of Moore. Most of the pedestrians who they interviewed, and decided to show in the documentary were either against Moore or in general didn't particularly like him.

2.  How much do you agree or disagree with the ways in which they behaved, or the kinds of values and beliefs they displayed? Explain your feelings and point of view by describing an element to support your opinion.

I think the people in the documentary behaved as would be expected. They all made a film about Michael Moore and the different things he has done after he has become famous as a result of his documentaries. Those things being good or bad were all expressed in the documentary Manufacturing Dissent. I personally think the writers of Manufacturing Dissent didn't think very highly of Moore, as throughout most of this documentary they were constantly finding faults in his actions. This was very clearly shown in the documentary, which I think is fine because I believe everyone is entitled to have an opinion

3.  Was there anything about the Documentary that was biased or omitted? If there was, why do you think things may have been left out.

There was some biased opinions in the documentary. Debbie Melnyk and Rick Caine (the people who made this film) also had to edit their documentary. How do we know if they are leaving out key facts or opinions from this documentary? The answer is we don't. I don't think they should be running after Moore saying he is a liar and leaves parts out of his documentaries (editing, which all documentarians have to do), because we don't know what parts they are showing us and which parts they decided to cut. Now I am not targeting Debbie Melnyk or Rick Caine I am simply countering their argument, by asking them the same question they asked of Moore in this documentary.

Bowling for Columbine

1. Describe the ways different people in the Documentary behaved, or the kinds of values and beliefs they displayed. Describe an element from the film to support your opinion.

Some people in the film displayed their distaste for the American gun laws, while others believed the gun laws that were set in place were necessary. The people of America are fueled by fear and this leads them to believe the only way they can remain safe, or to protect their family is by owning a gun. The director of the film Michael Moore indicated throughout this documentary how opposed he was to the gun laws of America. He also showed his unsatisfacation regarding the enormous amounts of shootings in the USA. When Moore went to Canada he discovered how much more Canadians trusted each other in their community and how little fear they had of criminal offences. He interviewed a few Canadians regarding guns in their community. He discovered that Canadians had a similar amount of guns in their communities as Americans did, however the shooting rate was much lower than the USA. This inspired Moore to take action, by showing America that fear of the unknown is not necessary. By doing this I believe he hopes the shooting statistics will be lower.

2.  How much do you agree or disagree with the ways in which they behaved, or the kinds of values and beliefs they displayed? Explain your feelings and point of view by describing an element to support your opinion.

I thought for some aspects of the film Moore overstepped his boundaries a little bit. For example at the end of the film when he was criticizing Charlton Heston, he kept blaming him for having a pep rally (advertising the NRA(National Rifle Association)) after the shooting of the 6 year old girl at a school in Flint, Michigan. This man had absolutely nothing to do with the shooting and his only intentions was to make a profit from the NRA who he was advertising for. Moore decided to keep chasing him around his own home to gain answers from him about his intentions about the pep rally that happened later that afternoon (The afternoon when the girl was shot). I agree with Moore's opinion of the gun laws. I don't believe it to be necessary and it is only aiding in the violent acts of people within the different communities of America.

3.  Was there anything about the Documentary that was biased or omitted? If there was, why do you think things may have been left out?

Yes there were some biased opinions in the documentary. Moore was obviously very against the gun laws that were established in the United States and this was very evident in his film. I'm sure he isn't the only person in America with this opinion, however in a documentary you want to gain insight into both sides of the argument. Moore however (for the most part) gained insight into people who had the same beliefs as he did. I think he left out more opinions of citizens who are for the gun laws because it would be contradictory to his own opinion. Since his documentary is based on the outrageous gun laws of America it wouldn't be very fitting to have more than half your interviewees agreeing and supporting the law, which is the very thing that this documentary is disagreeing with.

Spellbound documentary

1. Describe the ways different people in the Documentary behaved, or the kinds of values and beliefs they displayed. Describe an element from the film to support your opinion.

Most of the kids in the film knew they were very smart, but  they appeared to be very timid and shy. From watching Spellbound I don't think  the kids were used to getting so much attention, just by the way they acted in front of the camera. An example of some of the beliefs they showed was when almost none of the kids believed they could win the spelling bee, however their parents have absolute faith in their children's abilities.

2.  How much do you agree or disagree with the ways in which they behaved, or the kinds of values and beliefs they displayed? Explain your feelings and point of view by describing an element to support your opinion.

I think the way the people behaved was very normal. The kids are probably very nervous and excited about making it on to the national spelling bee, therefore they have every right to act like that in front of the camera. For example at the beginning of the film when the kids were first being interviewed (back ground information on the children and how they came to be in the spelling bee) most of them were very shy and didn't talk very loudly or say a lot. This is understandable because from watching the first part of the documentary which was solely based on one of the eight kids, most of them appeared to be a little bit timid and shy and this never changed throughout the documentary.

3.  Was there anything about the Documentary that was biased or omitted? If there was, why do you think things may have been left out?
The only thing I think they left of the documentary is the back story of a couple of the kids. They explain the back story for some of the people in the documentary, but not everybody had their back story completely explained. I don't think there was any biased in this documentary because all the kids were vey smart and had an equal chance of winning the spelling bee.

4.  How did things like music, lighting, editing, statistics, expert opinions, news footage, celebrity opinions, testimonials (characters directly addressing the camera) and the various conventions of documentary affect your opinion of what you were viewing? Describe an element from the film that demonstrates one of the conventions of documentary film making.

The different conventions of a documentary added to Spellbound by creating different atmospheres. During the national spelling bee the different types of conventions helped to display the grandiose of the competition, as well as showing the nervousness of each kid. The grandiose was displayed by the fading to black and back to colour again, and by having expert opinions about the competition. The editing was done in such a way as to keep the documentary moving and to specifically focus on the eight kids they had selected to follow on their journey through this competition. The opinions of past people who had won the competition before added to the overall effect of how large and prestigious this competition is.

5.  What is the overall message of the documentary? Is the message effectively conveyed to the audience? Choose one point in the film that demonstrates effective communication of the overall message.

The overall message of this documentary is be the best you can be. The message is effectively conveyed to the audience. Throughout the documentary the kids constantly put their best effort forward.  An example would be when all the kids made it through the first day of the competition. After that only a few of them made it on to the final rounds but they were competing against children who were some of the best spellers in America, however they never gave up and always showed confidence in their selves.

Ivory Wars

The different elements effected the way I viewed this documentary because it helped to keep my interest in the documentary and effectively conveyed their message. Without the conventions of a good documentary I would still have found this documentary interesting because I care about this topic and have an interest in learning more about it, however adding the conventions of this documentary overall made this documentary more appeasing and in my opinion it captivated the audience. An example of one of the conventions of the documentary that was used in Ivory Wars was statics about where elephants travel to eat the fresher and more abundant sources of food. It showed how when the elephants left the reservation, their numbers started to automatically dwindle. Hunters and poachers would attack the elephants for the ivory that is in their tusks, but the only way to obtain the ivory is to kill the elephants when they are travelling to a place where their food sources are abundant at certain times of a year. The statics showed how the elephant numbers are decreasing every time they leave the reservation for a different/more plentiful source of food. The statics are used to help relay the message help protect the elephants for poachers and hunters.

American's view of Rob Ford

1) What is the American Perspective on Rob Ford? Why do they care?

The American's think Rob Ford is a joke and therefore gain amusement out of what he has to say. The only reason they care about him is to make fun of him which in some cases could help their shows get higher ratings.

 2) How has Rob Ford controlled his message through the American Media?

He has taken the American media's attention as a positive thing, while in truth he is being made fun of. Any attention he gets from all types of media he tries to turn it into a positive thing, because he sees attention as a good thing. He tries to control his image and the way people see him in America, when in reality he is making  a bigger fool of himself.

3)  Is the American media well informed on the issues that surround Rob Ford. Explain.

The Americans are not well informed of the issues surrounding Rob Ford. They don't know his history and therefore are only informed about current issues surrounding him. If they were well informed, they would have probably payed more attention to him when he came into office.

4) What do you think are Rob Fords prospects for a future in Politics? Explain.

I think if Rob Ford doesn't get voted back into office as mayor of Toronto he will try and gain a higher position in the government of Canada. Since the cities budget came out a week after Rob Ford was stripped from all his power he is starting to look very promising as the budget shows an increase of $64 a year in property taxes and more. Therefore I think a lot of people will be inclined to re-vote him into office.

Rob Ford Scandal

  1. Who made - and who sponsored - this message, and for what purpose?

The Daily show is the one who created this video. The purpose of this news report is to make fun of politicians (specifically Rob Ford in this video) from a very leftist- wing point of view.

2.                  Who is the target audience, and how is the message specifically tailored to them?

The target audience of this message is for the people of Toronto, for whom this story is relevant.  People in Toronto know that Rob Ford is not doing a great job representing our city and his poor judgement and lack of insight have become a joke to everyone around the world. Jon Stewart makes this report very amusing and funny, therefore making this message geared towards Torontonians.

3.                  What are the different techniques used to inform, persuade, entertain, and attract attention?

Jon Stewart is a brilliant political satirist, who through the use of wit and sarcasm denounces Rob Ford.  He does this by using video clips of Rob Fords’ radio apology (but chosen specifically to humor the public), and showing pictures with large eye catching slogans to grab the audience’s attention.

4.                  What messages are communicated (and/or implied) about certain people, places, events, behaviours, lifestyles, etc.

The message communicated through this video suggests that Rob Ford is a bad influence on Toronto, and therefore should not be running the city.   Rob Ford should get his ** together because he is the mayor of Toronto and his behavior is completely inappropriate for someone of his rank.  Apologies are meaningless in the face of continuous lies.  Unfortunately, the show also communicates that while Toronto has Rob Ford as its mayor, it is a less desirable place for people to visit.

5.                  How current, accurate, and credible is the information in this message?

The information in this video is credible because Jon Stewart is showing much seen footage of Rob Ford either apologising, admitting or lying about different things people have accused him of doing. The clips and pictures have been aired on Toronto T.V. and radio stations.

6.                  What is left out of this message that might be important to know?

Chief Bill Blair’s opinion has been left out of this message. He would be important to mention in this video because he is the one who came out and said they (being the police) have the video of Rob Ford smoking Crack-Cocaine and making racist and homophobic remarks. Even though the point of this video is to make fun of Rob Ford essentially it would have completed the truth about why Rob Ford is coming out and making all of these big apology statements to the public.

Bell Media and tracking/distributing customers media habits

1)      Why do you think Bell Media would want to track your media consumption on their services?

I think Bell media wants to track our media consumption because it allows Bell to see what topics we are interested in. By allowing Bell to see what topics we are interested in they can make the advertisements we see more geared towards our interests making us more inclined to buy a product. It also gives the customer a chance to see ads that they actually want to see, rather than having a bunch of random ads on media sites they use.

2) Do you think that Bell should have the right to track and distribute the media habits of its customers? Yes or no (explain).

I think Bell should only have the right to track and distribute our media habits only if the customers agree for their media habits to be tracked. If we don’t want our media habits to be tracked them as a customer we should have the right to not have our personal media habits tracked.

3) Who benefits from the tracking of customers media habits?

The advertisers will benefit from the tracking of customers media habits because the customers are now seeing advertisements that they actually care about, which may make them more inclined to buy one of the advertiser’s products. Bell also benefits from customer’s media habits because if they prove to the advertisers that they are more of their consumers will buy their products, the advertisers will pay Bell more money to have their products advertised. This will benefit Bell because in the end Bell will end up receiving more revenue from the advertising firms

4) What do customers stand to lose if their media consumption is tracked and distributed?

If a customer’s media habits are tracked and distributed by Bell, it allows Bell free access to our information. As a customer we will get nothing in return for giving Bell access to our information. However we are forced to pay hundreds of dollars a month to Bell for our services yet when we give them something (that will benefit them) for free we are not given any recompenses. This is what customers stand to lose if they allow Bell to track and distribute their media consumption.

Merchants of cool

1.      What are people watching, wearing, listening to, playing and reading?
Some popular trends people are into are:
Watching: Vampire diaries, Pretty Little Liars, Survivor blood vs. water, Modern family, how I met your Mother, Teen wolf, Glee, The Amazing race and The Voice
Listening: Lorde, Avicii, Miley Cirus, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Jayz, Drake, Zedd, Justin Beiber and Ellie Goldings
Playing: GTA 5, Just Dance, FIFA 13 and 14, Candy Crush and Mario Kart
Reading: Mortal instruments, Hunger Games trilogy, Harry Potter series, Lord of The Rings trilogy, Divergent trilogy, The Gathering and The Hobbit
2.      Are their common trends among peer groups or are people discovering and exploring their own individual cultural expressions?
There is a mixture of both. There are people who follow trends and people who are trying to start new trends. Some people are a mix of both creating trends and following them.  In my opinion people who follow trends are either trying to fit in or are simply wearing the trends because they like how they look. People who are creating their own trends/ are wearing their own style of clothing don’t want to be main stream. They want to make their own type of cool, or are maybe even are trying to start their own trends and who says they can’t! People are individuals and what they wear is a means of expressing oneself.
3.      Do people strive to be the mooks and midriffs of the “Merchants of Cool” or do they seek different ways of interacting with others?
Most teenagers I know don’t per say strive to follow the trends, however they sometimes we end up following them anyways. People don’t always follow trends just because they want to be cool. They follow the trends because they like what the trend is or because they simply because they want to fit in our clothes can say a lot about us and following the trends can sometimes give us a good image of ourselves. The trends can make us look more grown up or professional, therefore making us feel important and in some environments cool. However being cool isn't always why people decide to follow trends.
4.      What affects the current cultural trends at Riverdale?
The factors affecting current trends at Riverdale are the different ages of students, our friends, what everyone else thinks is trending, our gender and our personality.
5.      Is there one specific genre or form of media that influences trend or are students informed by a variety of media?

Students are influenced by a variety of media. There are so many different types of media today, giving students a variety of things to choose from. One of the main influences would be magazines, movies or T.V shows simply because we often watch or look at these types of media multiple times each day.

Redford vs. Redford

1     1. With such differing opinions on the Alberta Oil Patch (Tar sands), how do we know who is telling the truth?

We don’t know who is telling the truth because everyone has different opinions, including Alison Redford and Robert Redford. In my opinion Robert Redford is telling people facts about the tar sands and how they will harm the future generation and Alison Redford is trying to appease the people who voted her into power, but everyone is different and will have a different opinion.

2    2.  What benefits does each side gain by spinning the truth to their own advantage?

If Robert Redford spins the truth to his advantage he could effectively convince Canadians how tar sands will impact the future generation in many bad ways. He has the potential to gain more supporters, so he may succeed in riding Alberta of the tar sands. If Alison Redford spins the truth to her advantage, she could gain more supporters to help Alberta keep the tar sands, because she believes they are the backbone of Alberta economy and to get rid of them would make Alberta’s economy suffer.

3. Who are the biggest losers if Robert Redford's message is correct?

If Robert Redford is right the biggest losers are the supporters of the tar sands, the countries who Canada trades oil with and the government officials in Alberta. They will be the biggest losers because Canada will make less money if we don’t have any oil to export, Alberta’s economy will suffer and government officials will lose the battle of keeping the oil sands, which they believe ultimately  help support Canada’s economy.

4. Who are the biggest losers if the Premiere of Alberta Alison Redford's message is correct?

If Alison Redford’s message is correct the biggest loser are future Canadians.  Alison Redford mentioned how the tar sands are the backbone of Alberta’s economy, if Alberta continues to use tar sands as an energy source and a money source (by selling the oil to other countries) Alberta would still have a good economy.  However the impact of the oil sands will contaminate some water sources, and the pollution will affect the weather for many years to come, therefore affecting the future generations of Canadians.

Sneaker confidental

1)    Does this documentary show differing sides to the Sneaker debate? Explain.
This documentary does show different sides to the sneaker debate. This documentary is explaining to us how some people buy sneakers for their collections, how some wear them as a fashion statement and how some people use them for their regular use, as a shoe for playing sports. This documentary also touches on the differing prices of sneakers, showing how we are paying a lot of money more for the brand name, rather than the quality. An example would be the Michael Jordan basketball shoes. They are defiantly a good quality shoe but we are more or less paying a price for the brand name than the actual shoe itself. There are other perfectly good basketball shoes out there that would serve the same purpose as the Michael Jordan shoes. The only difference is they are less expensive and you aren't paying for the brand name.
2)  Is the sneaker culture an invention of the shoe industry devised to sell more shoes?
Yes and no. Obviously the main aim of sneaker companies is to manufacture shoes and make a profit from them, but the sneaker culture is also about showing off your sneaker collection. People who collect sneakers aim to show-off their limited edition or custom made sneakers to fellow sneaker collectors and other pedestrians on the street. The sneaker culture was not invented by shoe industries but by people who have a love of sneakers and want to have the most prestigious sneaker collection in the country.
3)     Are sneaker prices reflective of the work that goes into making them or are they inflated to give certain sneakers status?
Yes sneaker prices are reflective of the amount of work that goes into them. If the sneakers are custom designed or are limited edition, they will obviously be much more expensive than a regular pair of sneakers. The more amount of effort put into the sneakers the higher the price. This makes sense because the designers want to make more money off of something they put a lot of effort into creating.
4)   Do you think sneakers are a necessary tool for sports like running or basketball?
I do think sneakers are a necessary tool for sports. Sneakers can help reduce injury while doing a sport because they have some ankle support, soles that can help cushion your feet from the ground and can help soften the blow to your legs of the continuous movement of our feet hitting the ground. Sneakers can also help give you grip if you playing a sport like volleyball or basketball which can help you play the sport to the best of your ability.
5)  Are sneaker performance claims unrealistic?
Some sneaker performance claims are a little bit far-fetched, for example sneakers won’t make you run faster. How fast you run depends on your fitness level not the type of shoes you have. Some claims for sneakers are perfectly acceptable though. For example if a sneaker company claims they have better grip for court sports or excellent ankle support that is a perfectly acceptable claim to make.

6)  Do you have a shoe fetish? Yes.
If so what do you think influences your shoe purchases?
The need of a new pair of shoes will influence weather I buy a new pair of shoes. If I need shoe for an event I will also go out and purchase a pair. However if I am shopping and a see a pair of shoes that I don’t have a specific event for I will purchase them because they are trending this season, I love the colour, I love the type of shoe or because they are really pretty.
7)  Try to recall the many ways in which shoe companies try to market to consumers outlined in the documentary.  Write a media log that explains the different methods that you are marketed to by shoe manufacturers.
1. Shoe manufactures will have celebrities or athletes model their shoes, or the shoe company will support an athlete so their products can be marketed. Shoe manufactures do this so their products look prestigious and better than their competition.
2. Shoe manufactures will also make limited edition of some types of shoes. They do this so they can make more money, while promoting their company. The limited edition shoes are no different than the regular shoes, except they may have different design making them appealing for shoe collectors.
3. Some shoe manufactures will make their shoes for a very cheap price. The shoes will be good shoes; they just won’t be millions of dollars. This again helps shoe companies earn money. The more customers that buy these shoes will also contribute the marketing scheme for the companies. If a large amount of people purchase their shoes, their product will marketed everywhere. Shoe companies can only market their shoes in so many places, and the more people that wear these shoes the better the marketing for the company. It will also send the message that the shoes are of good quality, comfortable and stylish to wear.

8) Post a picture on your blog of a pair of shoes that you own or wish to own.  What makes these shoes particularly desirable to you? Are they worth the money?

These shoes are desirable to me because they were very trendy last awards season. I could wear these shoes to a fancier occasion, and I don’t own many high heels so it would give me a larger option of something to wear. I absolutely love these shoes to. They are unique which  makes me attracted to them. These shoes are very recognizable as a Christian Loubouin design as the red soled high heels are one of his signature styles. I find these shoes very chic and would get a lot of use out of them. Therefore I believe these shoes are worth their price because they are unique and very stylish.

Twitter disputes and Grand theft auto 5

Firefighters fired over Tweets

1. Do you think they should have been fired for their tweets? Explain

I think the firefighters deserved to be fired for writing those tweets because it is sexists to women, and may make the work environment uncomfortable for women working at same station as those firefighters. The tweets may have been a joke, but we are in a modern era were women are more accepted, and are able to do any job they please. The tweets are offensive to women and should never have been posted by those firefighters.

2. Based on the article what do you think is the opinion of the writer? Explain.

The opinion of the writer is he agrees the firefighters were right to be fired. The writer has clear supporting arguments convincing the public the firefighters deserved to be fired.  He made arguments about how the firefighters were being sexists and should know better than to be posting that kind of thing online, which clearly shows the writer agrees with this decision.

Grand theft auto 5

1. Based on your interpretation of the articles do you think the game is too violent?

I think the video game is too violent. The objection of the game in general is violent and I believe it has no right to be sold. The messages teenagers can take from these games varies on the person, however it can in some cases influence violent acts and be harmful to some teenagers minds. Games like this have bad messages and shouldn't be sold to anyone, no matter what the age.

2. Should the release of a new video game be considered news?

I think the release of a new video game is news because it can help parents be aware of what games are out there. Some games are very violent and parents should be aware of the games their kids are playing and how it could possibly be affecting them. If anything the news helps to increase awareness of the game and could help the creator have a grander opening day, helping him/her to have a higher income and be more successful.

3. Are these news agencies simply providing more advertising for the video game industry or are they attempting to provide a critical viewpoint from which to assess the games impact on society.

The agencies are both providing advertising for the video game industry, while attempting to provide a critical viewpoint to help assess the games and their impacts on society. I believe the agencies are doing both because they want to make money from the advertising, while being able to aid the public with the knowledge of what this game entails and its intended audience (i.e. its maturity level).

Teenagers and texting

1.      What is the message of each Media Text.?

The message of the video was for parents to talk to kids about sexting, so their kids may avoid this situation if possible. The parents must let their children know that once something has been sent it is very difficult to delete it or get it back.  The message of the quiz was do not send pictures or texts without thinking about the consequences first. Think about your morals before you do something that could potentially ruin someone’s life or reputation.

2.      Who is the target audience for each Media Text?

Video: parents
Quiz: Teenagers

3.       Which one of these texts is more effective and why?

Both media texts are effective, they just have specific audience they are geared towards. For me personally the quiz was a more effective media text because I found it more interesting and it kept my attention longer than the video did. However bother media texts successfully convey a message to its audience and therefore were both very effective.
